Grade: 7
Subject: Physical Education
Description of Activity:
  1. Read the tutorial on the following page: http://www.tutorials.com/05/0596/05961.asp
  2. Watch the following video on common shooting mistakes: http://www.5min.com/Video/How-to-Shoot-a-Basketball---Common-Mistakes-140617346
  3. Once you have gone through the online tutorial and watched the video, use the information you have gained to post a discussion on the following questions:

- List the 4 steps in a free throw shot.

- Compare the 4 steps of a free throw to the steps you use when shooting.

- What stages or key factors do you need to work on next gym class?

GLO: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; dance, games, types of gymnastics, individual activities and activities in an alternative environment; e.g., aquatics and outdoor pursuits.

SLO: Demonstrate activity specific basic skills in a variety of games.

ICT Outcomes: Students will critically assess information accessed through the use of a variety of technologies.

Why use technology?

  1. This lesson is enhanced through computer integration because it gives students the opportunity to visually break down the components of a free throw shot. These visual aids may not be available to a student in the gym.
  2. Using technology in a physical education class provides students who are less athletically inclined to shine in another type of performance other than just the physical.
  3. The questions provided will give students the opportunity to critically think about their performance on the court.
  4. Blog discussion postings can be used as an assessment tool besides the observation that happens in the gym.
  5. This may also be a critical tool for a teacher that is not a proficient basketball player and only has minimal experience on teaching the proper technique to shoot.

  1. I really liked this lesson! Being someone who is not a sports oriented person, it was very informative for me. My only constructive comment is that most kids don't have basketball equipment at home so it would be hard for them to try out their new knowledge right away (like I wanted to!!). Overall though, I thought this would be a great follow up homework assignment to a basketball lesson during the day.
